Donald Trump experienced a troubling lapse in security during a recent assassination attempt.

Despite clear indications of a potential threat, Trump’s protection detail failed to act appropriately, raising serious questions about their conduct. This incident highlights not only security shortcomings but also shows broader concerns about political leadership and the state of American political discourse.

Trump’s security were informed of a man on the roof of the venue where Trump was set to give his speech on the day of the attempt. Police sources revealed that local police first spotted the suspect, later to be known as Crooks, carrying a range finder around 3 PM.

Despite losing track of him temporarily, Crooks was seen again an hour before Trump’s appearance. At this point, he was observed scouting the rooftop with a backpack and range finder. Although this behavior was reported to a command center, Crooks was not detained or questioned.

As the event approached, Secret Service agents spotted Crooks on the rooftop at 5:52 PM, just ten minutes before Trump was due to take the stage. Despite this clear and present danger, Trump was allowed to proceed to the stage. The decision to move Trump to a potentially unsafe location has been criticized as a severe lapse in security protocol.

Trump began his speech at 6:02 PM. A little later, a local police officer, having climbed up to the roof, encountered Crooks who stood holding a gun at him. The officer, as it was expected, left the scene without doing anything. Moments later, Crooks made himself ready to carry out the assassination of Trump and he fired at 6:11 PM.

The failure to act on early warnings about Crooks and the decision to let Trump take the stage in the face of a potential threat has raised questions about the efficacy and judgment of the security detail. The Secret Service’s inaction during a critical period has been described as misconduct bordering on criminal negligence.

However, Charles Hoskinson has claimed that recent speeches, including Trump’s one, are missed opportunities for performing positive and uniting speech acts. Concerning Trump’s recent speech, Hoskinson said that he was let down as the address could not reach people and move them to change for the better. He implied that both major political parties lack leadership and direction.

Drawing comparisons with historical events, the assassination attempt on Trump recalls President Ronald Reagan’s 1981 address following his own assassination attempt. Reagan’s speech is remembered for its balance of personal reflection and policy discussion.

After being shot, Reagan expressed gratitude for public support and redirected the conversation to pressing economic issues, advocating for reduced government spending and tax cuts.

In the address, Reagan showed the country’s political elites how private troubles could be used to push a larger message and make Americans feel like they are one people. This is a far cry from the landscape of politics today where debates are characterised by anger and intolerance and where leaders continually challenge one another.
