A fake digital wallet posing as the NFT marketplace Magic Eden emerged on the iOS App Store. The NFT marketplace had confirmed via X that the malicious wallet was not affiliated with its ecosystem.

Fake Magic Eden Wallet Emerges

The issue was initially identified by a Magic Eden executive with the X handle, Voh, who confirmed that the malicious wallet could drain users of their tokens. The representative added that the wallet drainer is likely region-specific since U.S.-based users could not access the app.

Voh assured users that the Magic Eden team is working to get the malicious wallet app removed from the App Store.

In March 2023, Magic Eden halted its iOS and Android mobile apps. The firm noted that most of its mobile traffic at the time came from the web version. The NFT marketplace added that more emphasis was laid on developing its homepage user interface and cross-chain experience. Today, the Solana-based marketplace has expanded its terrain into other blockchain networks like Ethereum and Bitcoin.

Since there is no official Magic Eden mobile app on either the iOS App Store or Google PlayStore, unsuspecting users will find it difficult to detect the malicious app as fake.

Magic Eden Users Blame Apple

Several users have blamed Apple, the tech giant behind the iOS App Store, for the recent fault. Some users claim that Apple has lax guidelines for onboarding new mobile apps. Other users stress that Apple does not allow “legitimate crypto companies to get their apps approved on the app store, yet they allow scam apps to run rampant.”

Another mobile app wallet drainer was identified on the App Store claiming to be the Solana-based decentralized exchange Jupiter. Despite being in existence for more than a month now, Apple has yet to take down the malicious platform. It remains unclear as to whether the fake Magic Eden wallet will be taken down soon.
